Reflection

I have been in the US for 2 weeks now, and it has been a whirlwind of seeing friends, family, moving, and job hunting. I have barely had anytime to even check my email, but I now have time to put down some thoughts about my summer.

I want to start of by giving thanks. I want to praise God for the way He moved this summer in Moldova. He brought 7 amazing girls to the Grace House, took them out of desperate situations, and gave them an opportunity that will bless their lives forever. I know that my presence this summer at the Grace house could have easily been someone else, but I do know that God did use me to love the girls at Grace house, and to help them connect.

Lena, Marina, Olga, Jazgul, Doina, Alina, and Natalia are incredible young women. Each is completely unique, and beautiful in their own way. I love when they are laughing together, and I love it when they support each other in hard times. The girls moved into the house in waves, and with each new girl, she would ask if they went to the same school last year. The girls were that well connected to each other, that it seemed like they knew each other for years. They accepted each new girl with loving arms, and they accepted me in the same way. The girls really cared about me, and they could easily see if something was wrong, and would ask if I was ok. Though we did not speak the same languages, I feel like we got to a point of being comfortable communicating and being around each other.

Being in Moldova for an extended amount of time is completely different than a mission’s trip that lasts for a week. In the past it is an emotional and spiritual overload, and you come home just wanting more of that same experience. I did have the expectation going to Moldova, that it would be an extension of that previous experience. Usually the biggest challenge for me is the physical demands of the trip, but I adjusted to the time zone, and got plenty of rest, so the physical demands were not the challenge. I experienced other challenges adjusting to the culture, loneliness, insecurity, and spiritual warfare. Thank you to all who prayed for me while I was gone, I really don't think I would have made it without your prayers.

Through those challenges I learned that God can do great things, even things don't go as planned! I also gained confidence in who I am in Christ, and what God can do through me. I never would have thought that I could teach English or Computer without a translator to trafficking victims, and they would stay engaged during the lesson. God also used these challenges to humble my heart, and to submit to His will.

I think the overall major lesson that I learned while I was in Moldova, was that this is real life. I know that sounds obvious, but when you only experience a place for a week a two each year, it seems like this far off distant reality when you come home. Leaving the orphanage in Falesti, after a week of loving on my sweet sister Daniella was particularly difficult for me. I was still in Moldova, and it was more real to me that she was still alone, at the orphanage 3 hours away from where I stayed. Human trafficking became much more real to me, when I was placing the hands of victims onto computers keys, and trying to show them how to type. It was also a major reality check when one of my students decided to go back to familiarity of her pimp and trafficking, and I didn't see her again. The intense poverty of Moldova became real me when the girls at the Grace House were afraid we wouldn't have food the next day, and hearing their stories of times they passed out, because they weren't nourished. The desperate situations of these girls became real to me, when I learned that one of their mothers tried to sell her and her sisters when she was younger, and when one of the girl's cousins has been trafficked.

On the other hand, the reality of the good that God has done in Moldova has become much more real to me. When Lena tells her testimony, and shares how her life was changed by hearing the testimony of a man at camp who had the same story as she did, I know that we come to Moldova for a reason. Seeing the amazing things that Beginning of Life is involved in by reaching 10,000 high school students to talk to them about preventions of aids and trafficking, and having one of the few rehab centers for victims of trafficking gives me hope. Meeting my new friend Elena who works with trafficking victims, and hearing about the many other organizations that are committed to stopping and caring for this tragedy, reminds me that God is working in so many ways I don't see. Doing a village camp in Moldova with Moldovans shows me that there are those who care for their own people. Hearing my friend Eli talk to his best friend Jesus, affirms that some kids are really getting what a personal relationship with Christ is.

I am already excited about going back to Moldova for a couple of weeks next summer, and I hope that God allows me to have that opportunity. Moldova will always be a huge part of my heart and my life. Thanks to all who invested in this part of my life through prayers, words of encouragement, finances, and support. I am excited about my new stage in life, and the opportunity to invest in Moldova through my internship and JMI. Photos!

Check out this link to see my photos from the summer!

Shopping!

The girls and I had a really fun week. Tuesday we went to the bazaar, which is this huge open air market in the downtown Chisinau area. You can buy everything there from any type of food, jewelry, clothes, electronics…anything. I have never been to anything like that before! It is very busy, and crowded. People have rows and rows of stands that are set up in different “departments.” The girls were given a gift from a donor for school clothes, and we spend 8 hours shopping! Elena, the psychologist who is also living with the girls, was a big help! The girls did not get everything they needed so they went back the next day! I stayed behind with a few of the girls and went over more Microsoft Word with Irina’s translating help.
That night we had a photo shoot! The girls were so excited to put on their new clothes, and to take pictures. We took almost 200 pictures! The girls said they felt like princesses wearing their new clothes. They also said that living at the Grace House is a like a dream, but its reality!
This week we continued talking about who we are in Christ, and the love languages. We talked about gift giving, and how God gives us abundant gifts, because he loves us. God is intentional with blessing us with the things we truly desire, and that we should follow in Jesus’ example when he turned the water into wine. He saw a need, and fulfilled it. We also talked about spiritual gifts, and how we can confidence in who we are through knowing what our spiritual gifts are.
Today we went out for pizza, and the girls were so excited! It was a reward for writing their biographies for the JMI website. We had a feast of pizza, crepes, and salad…it was so good!

I am so proud of how the girls are doing with English. I have been able to communicate with them so well! After pizza a few girls and I went on a walk to a park, and we talked the whole time! Jazgul is our youngest girl, but is the best English speaker. I really think she could be a translator in a year or two.
Natalia also knows a lot of English, because she spent 6 months in the states. I really love spending time with the girls, they can be hilarious.

I am so glad that Natalia is with us. She is an amazing example to the other girls, and fits in so well. She has a great sense of humor, and is so sweet. The girls have really accepted her, and don’t treat her any differently than anyone else. She is so beautiful, and I don’t even notice how she looks on the outside anymore.

Please pray for:
A great last week!
Doina’s first full week of cosmetology school
Irina’s Visa
Safe travels for the Belciug family, while they are on vacation
That I don’t have any problems during my flights next week

Last couple of weeks...

I can hardly believe that I only have 11 days left in Moldova. I am mixed with sad and excited emotions. Last week we celebrated one of our girl’s birthdays! It was Jazgul’s birthday a few days ago while she was at camp, so we celebrated a little late. We had a great time! We went to Mall-Dova, went to the food court, and went bowling. The girls had never been to a food court before, and didn’t know what to do. They eventually got chicken sandwiches, salad and ice cream. We then had a lot of fun bowling! Brooke and I also made our birthday girl pancakes for breakfast. The girls made her a card, and got her a cake and flowers. I think she felt really special, and that of course was the goal!

The other day I was having a lesson about who we are in Christ. I think it is so important to figure that out early on, because it is the foundation of who we are. I had the girls write about who they were, and what they liked or didn’t like about themselves. Natalia completely blew me away. She has so much confidence in herself! She was saying how she likes her personality, and even how she looks, because God had her look this way for a reason. She is an incredible person, and I really enjoy spending time with her. She doesn’t use her hand or the way she looks to keep her back, but she does everything that the other girls do. I am so thankful that she is at the Grace House, she is an amazing example to all of us.
I went to another church in the city, and they have a ministry called Girls of God. It is for girls who have similar backgrounds as my girls do. I was asked to share my story with them, and it was a great experience. It is so encouraging to see God working all over Moldova, and in so many different ways.

Prayer Requests:
I feel like I have been dealing with a lot of spiritual warfare since I have been to Moldova. The devil has really tried to discourage me, make me insecure, and doubt my purpose in being here.
Also, please pray that I am very intentional in the next two weeks, and I make the most of everyday.
Praise God, because all of the girls are enrolled in school, and many have scholarships!!!

An amazing week!

I helped out with another short camp this week! It was only 3 days, and was for children in a village an hour away from Chisinau. It was the first camp that I ever participated in that Moldovans coordinated, and they did a great job. We set up camp at this really pretty park, and had music, skits, games, crafts and lunch. The highlight of the week was meeting a 13 year old boy who was in my group. His name is Igor, one of the many Igors that I have grown to love in Moldova. He is a very small boy for his age, and has a physical disability. His legs are bent and turned in, and he is has trouble walking. He is able to get around really well considering his problem. He is a very sweet boy who smiles a lot. He reached out to me the first day, and would joke around with me by saying "Ingrid" and looking away like he didn't say anything. I sat next to him, and we played thumb wars, the hand slapping games, and "Double Double". He would put his head on my shoulder and hug me. He was so sweet and bright!

I continued teaching English, Computer, and life skills this week. The girls are picking up English really quickly! I went on a walk with two of the girls for about 30-40 minutes, and we talked the whole time with the English and Romanian that we both knew! It was pretty amazing that we could do that! They all have their own email addresses now, and are very excited.

Natalia moved in last night! She is the girl who was severely burned as a baby, and is deformed. She seems to be adjusting really well. The girls said that they were up really late talking with her! They seem to get along great. Please pray that things will continue to go well with the girls. She actually knows quite a bit of English, and we have had some great conversations!

Two of the girls are at a summer camp, and will be back Monday. Please pray for a safe return.

I have been having a lot of fun this week, because a girl from America has been here with me. Her name is Brooke and she lived in Moldova this past winter. We hit it off right away, and its nice to have another Ameican to vent to. Also, I have been really blessed by spending time with another girl, Irina. She is from Moldova, but lived in the states for a year. She has a job waiting for her in America, but she is having visa issues. Please pray that she is able to come back to America.

The elections happened this week, and the communists lost!!! Praise God!!! Please pray that their won't be any discprepency about the results, and that their won't be any protests.

Prayer Requests

These are just a few items to keep in prayer this week:

Tomorrow I am helping with with a day camp in a village that my host family organizes. I have no idea what to expect, I don't know how many kids we will have, or what group I'm in. I'm just showing up! Please pray that I'm able to serve well, and that the camp goes great. It is just for 3 days from 10-2pm.

Please pray that we can cover a lot with the girls this week. It is hard get them all together at once to have our lessons, but I'm going to just teach with whoever is here. This weekend just Marina was in the grace house, the others were at camp or at home. We had a lot of fun together, regardless of not talking much. We went to a pool yesterday, and today we did some English and computer. She helped me make some cards with English phrases and vocab words to put around the house. We also went to church together, and made dinner together.

On thursday, another girl is going to come and check out what is going on at the grace house, and see if she wants this to be her home.

Also, Natalia should be moving in soon, so please pray for a smooth transition for her.

Thank you for your prayers! I only have 4 weeks left and I want to make the most of my time while we are here.

What's going on!

English lessons, Computer lessons, and life skills are underway! I have a lot of faith in the girls when it comes to learning English. It is something that they really seem to enjoy, and they know quite a bit already! Our youngest girl, Jazgul( or her Moldovan name, Eugenia)can understand a lot, a lot, a lot! I can totally see her translating in the next couple years!

Food has been a challenge for the girls. They are not used to having so much food in the house all the time. They would eat their food so quickly and feel the need to eat all of the food prepared. They have trouble grasping the idea of leftovers. It is hard for them to believe that the food will be there tomorrow. Each girl shared with me a story about a time where they did not have food for an extended time. It was a wake up call for me, because the girls seem so normal, sweet, and fun. It is easy to forget they have hard very hard lives. There is a lot more going on psychological than I would have guessed. We talked about eating smaller portions, and slowing down. We also talked about nutrition during our life skills lesson, what foods have different vitamins, how much of each food group they should eat, how much water they should drink etc. They had no idea that you are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day, or that watermelon has very little vitamins. They are making an effort in this area, but it will take some time. Most of them are having some health issues too, and have gone to the doctor this week. Issues with headaches, upset stomachs, colds etc. I don't think their stomachs are used to eating so much, and so many different types of foods.

I made the girls a chore chart, and they chose jobs for each to do this week, and they are slowly getting into it. It took them a while to start doing their jobs, and not other people's jobs, and vise versa. They are very good about keeping the house clean, and are excited to learn new recipes. I taught one girl how to make chicken parmesan this week. Unfortunately though, the girls are not used to tomato sauce and it upset some of their stomachs..

Marina, Olga, and Jazgul are all really worried about getting into the school, and getting a good tuition rate. Many have the orphan status, but this does not guarantee that it will be inexpensive. Doina did get a full ride scholarship to her school for cosmetology which is a miracle!!! Please pray for the girls to get into the colleges that they desire, and to get a good tuition price. That is their prayer request every night.

I have not taught English and computer at Beginning of Life for a week or so. Last time I went the girls said they didn't want to learn English anymore. Their social worker was frustrated with them. She explained to me that their decisions have no logic, but are based solely on their mood. It is a little discouraging, but I'm not taking it personally. I hope to continue to teach the staff at BOL, and help out with their camp, and Aids outreach. Hopefully, the girls will change their minds and want to learn. They have been through so much, and so much has been damaged psychologically and spiritually. I just want them to feel God's love in any small way that I can.

I met a really sweet girl who works for another organization that works with trafficking victims in Moldova. It is called Project Rescue, and the website is www.projectrescue.com. She invited me to come to one their Bible studies and talk about my involvement in ministries in Moldova. I hope to connect with this organization more.

I am going to Straseni tomorrow! I am excited to see some of the girls from the last couple of weeks. I am hoping the word got out there, and that the girls will come!

Another great week!

I spent another great week at the Straseni orphanage participating in camp. I was able to spend more time with the older girls, and build deeper relationships with them. The girls really want me to come back and see them while I'm in Moldova, and I am hoping to go sometime next week. One of the girls has ringworm, and I want to make sure she gets some medicine. While I am there I want to try to have a Bible study and maybe do a craft. I met two really sweet girls that both speak english, and they have been really fun to get to know!

We have been blessed to hire another lady to work with the Grace House girls. Her name is Lena and she is a psychologist. She will be living with the girls, and helping them get into to school, and counseling them. It is an answer to prayer to have her with us, because we needed to have someone there after I leave.

I am really hoping to start all the lessons I have been preparing for this week. Two amazing women put together some incredible lifeskills materials for me to use. I hope to cover nutrition, The 5th habit for highly effective teenagers (we have done the first 4 so far,) have a discussion about trafficking, and talk about values this week. Along with those life skills the girls are eager to learn English, and computer skills, and I want to start our Love Languages Bible study.

All of the girls are trying to get into school, and that is a major prayer request for them.

Also please pray for me and the girls to have a clear communication as possible. It can be very difficult, because of the language and cultural differences.

Thank you for your prayers!

I love the Grace House Girls!

I have been so busy the past two weeks with both weeks at camp! Falesti was amazing, and I was glad to see some of the same kids that I met 4 years ago. The kids at Falesti, are truly the sweetest kids I have ever met! This week was also great at Straseni and Internat #2! I got to see a lot of the same kids at Straseni too! We had about 200 kids show up for camp this year, and it was amazing! I had 30 girls in my Bible study!!!

This week 5 girls moved into the Grace house! They are incredibly sweet, excited, and fun. They have totally hit it off with each other! I love them so much already. We had some “Life Skills” time as we are doing “7 habits of effective teenagers.” They are really enjoying it, and are participating a lot. They are all very open and honest, and we have been able to have some really great conversations already. What I am most impressed with is their strong faith! When the team was here we were able to experience an important faith moment with one of the girls that was truly incredible. Each girl is very different, but amazing and beautiful in their own way.

They helped out a lot at camp this week, and it was neat to see them interact with other kids who were in the same situation they were in. They also came to a lot of our group meetings even though they couldn’t understand anything. I am so proud of them already! Natalia should be here within the next week, and then another girl Alina is considering the grace house. It looks like we will have 6-7 girls at the house now, and I think this will be a really positive thing. I think having 9 teenage girls in the house would be a little overwhelming.

This week I will be starting to teach English, Computer, Lifeskills, and Bible study. We have already had a couple funny moments with the girls. A sweet lady from my church brought me a huge box of oreos that had 160 cookies. I put them in the grace house for 2 days, and they were completely gone! I also went shopping with the girls, and had fun with them as they picked out jeans, but definitely saw that we need to talk about the difference between what we need and what we want.
I will also return to Straseni for maybe 1-2 days with the next team here. I am going to be teaching at BOL two days a week too. I am excited to get into a normal schedule, and hoping the time doesn’t go too fast!

Please pray for the girls: Marina, Olga, Lena, Eugenia, and Doina. Also please pray that they will accept Natalia, and that Alina will know if she wants to be in the Grace House or not.
Please pray that I have wisdom in leading these girls, and that our time together will be productive.

Grace House Girls Selected!!

I am very excited to announce that 9 girls will be moving in this summer to the grace house within the next couple of weeks! The girls have a wide range of needs from being an orphan, being in extreme poverty, being physcially disabled, to have parents who are mentally ill. We chose girls who we saw great potential in, are hard working, and are excited to continue their education. I am so looking forward to getting to know each girl individually this summer. They all have different stories, and personalities, and I have the honor to be with them for 2+ months.

We have already began preparing for the girls to move in. The national director of the grace house and I went shopping for different items for the house. I feel like we have a lot to do in order to be ready for them to move in.

I have also been continuing to teach at BOL, which has been a lot of fun, but tiring. I had no idea how tiring it could be to teach for 7 hours! I am giving teachers a lot of credit!

Please pray for:
Safety for the RHCC team when the fly in on Saturday
The dynamics of the girls in the house
For the girls to accept Natalia, even though she is physically deformed. To read a story about her follow this link: http://www.reflector.com/news/locals-help-burn-victim-595842.html
For the girls to get into the different schools that they want, and will be best for them
For the two girls we are waiting on to hear from if they want to come to the grace house or not.
For Tanya at BOL to have more confidence in learning new things, and to not give up so quickly when she doesn't get something right away.

Another day of English Lessons, and More Interviews for Monday

Yesterday I spent three hours at BOL with the women who live at the rehab center. I met with one at a time for an hour, and we did a 1/2 an hour or English and a 1/2 an hour of Computer skills. I had a great time with these women! They are all very sweet, and enthusiastic to learn. God gave me a lot more patience than I ever knew I had. I had to go really slow through every part of the lesson, and had to repeat things many, many times. It was crazy to me, that a couple of these girls did not even know “Hello.” Two of girls had never used a computer before! I don’t even think they knew how to turn it on. I had to teach them how to use a mouse, how to click, how to shut down, how to start, etc. I also used a typing game online to teach them how to type. They really struggled with keeping their fingers in the right places, but eventually got it. It was a bit of a reality check for me. These women have been in sex slavery for who knows how long, and have not had any of the opportunities to learn like I have. It makes me really thankful for what I have, and gives me even more passion to help women in this situation. I learned how to use a computer when I was a little kid, and this is their opportunity to learn now! It is so essential for them to learn how to use a computer for them to be successful in our society. I am so honored that I get to teach them. I am excited to get to know these women, and to learn about their stories. They probably have endured more than I could ever imagine, and I’m so thankful that they have the chance to have a new life.

Three girls from the South of Moldova were supposed to interview today, but now they are coming on Monday. The past two weeks have been a major test of patience. I am ready to choose the girls who will be in the house, and start on everything we have been planning for them. In addition to the three girls, Natalia will be coming for a second interview. We are also hoping that the other girls from Falesti will come on Monday. We want to make a decision on Tuesday, so they can move in ASAP. Another girl will come stay on Saturday night that my host family knows, and we will interview her as well.

Please pray for me to have patience until they get here!

First English Lesson, Interviews, and Pad Thai!

Today was my first English lesson! I went to BOL and taught my lesson to the staff. I was really nervous, because I had never taught English before, but it went really well! We started by just going through the English alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. We also went over vowels, greetings, numbers, and times of day. I found this really goofy English video called "Hello English!" It was actually filmed in Romania by some guys from the Peace Corps, and it is pretty much perfect for beginners in English. I am going to include it in my lessons from time to time. I was supposed to start teaching computer and English to the rehab girls too, but I needed to come back to the grace house for interviews.

Three girls came from an orphanage to interview today, and I it was nice to see some of the girls I have led Bible studies with. The one girl, Elaina who I was really hoping to see wasn't able to make it. The girls said she was taken in by a family, but then the director said she was at a summer camp, and would come at another time... I hope she get's to come here! I am so glad to start this process, and anxious for us to decide who will be here.

On Saturday, some Americans brought another girl to interview for a spot at the grace house. Her name is Natalia, and she is 18 years old. She was severely burned by a fire when was an infant and was left deformed. Her hands were sealed shut like flesh covered mittens, and her face was also deformed. She was able to go to the US to have surgery on her hands, and she is able to write, knit, sew, etc. Please pray that Natalia will be placed in the best place for her, and that she will be able to catch up in her education. She was sent to an orphanage for disabled children, and her education was very neglected. We will decide on who is going to be in the grace house until after all the girls are interviewed, and we need God's wisdom in that process.

Saturday night I went to Mall-dova with my friend Kate and her boyfriend. Yes, it is really called Mall-dova, and it is a mall! We went to the food court, and I got Pad Thai!!!!! It was soooo good, probably because I haven't had Chinese food in a while! We played air hockey, and looked at store around the mall. It was a lot of fun!

Tonight I went to church with my roommate, Marianna. One of her friends was sweet enough to translate the whole service to me!

Please pray for:
Wisdom in deciding who will be in the grace house, and that the right girls will be selected.
That God uses me well in teaching English and computer at BOL.
For Victor and Valentina(the people rent out the grace house,) they got in a car accident, and need funding to fix it.

Beginning of Life, Wallpaper, Paris, and Falesti Girls

Today I met with the founder of an organization in Moldova called Beginning of Life ( BOL), and we talked about my involvement this summer. BOL is a nonprofit that started 9 years ago, and began by working with pregnant women who were victims of abuse and often human trafficking. They specialized in prevention of human trafficking, and working with mothers who are aids victims, and have recently ventured into rehabilitation of women who are victims of trafficking in Moldova. Currently there are 4 girls who are in their program; one has been there for 2 months, the other just a few days.

I will be interning with BOL two days a week and my activities will include teaching English to the girls and staff, computer skills, and life skills. I will also help out with their newsletter, camp for mothers and children in August, and a trafficking prevention magazine that will be marketed to young women similar to a fashion magazine.

This Friday, BOL will host an appreciation dinner for the principles of the public schools in the area. These principles allow BOL to do workshops in their schools. The theme of the dinner is Paris! They will have their staff dress up like waiters; have ballet dancers, and an opera singer! They will also have a cake that is shaped like a frog! :) It should be an interesting night, and I am going to help them "design the room."

I will be busy this summer for sure!

Currently I live with another girl, Marianna who is my age and graduated from the orphanage years ago. She is working at the grace house like a R.A, and is heading up renovations of the rooms. Today we worked on getting the wall paper off the walls, and it was a challenge. We have to finish at least 2 rooms before the girls move in a few weeks.

This Thursday several girls from the Falesti camp are supposed to visit the grace house and we will do some interviews. I am very excited to see the girls that I know from Falesti!

Prayer Requests:
That I am prepared to lead an English and Computer Lesson for the girls in the rehab center, and the staff by Tuesday June 16.
That I get better from the cold that I have.
That I make time to learn Romanian; so many people speak English here!
That God will prepare my heart for the women at the rehab center and the grace house.

I made it to Moldova!

Last night I finally arrived to Moldova, and I could not been any more excited to be here! The past two weeks I had the opportunity to travel around Europe on my way here. I went to Paris, London, and Dublin, and had so many amazing experiences. Thanks to the economy, and the opportunity to make the trip over to Moldova I was able to travel to Europe at a very low cost.

I was scheduled to arrive on June 5th, but was surprised to find out that my flight was canceled! I was stranded in London by myself, but God really provided for me by having a hotel and food covered by the airline. I flew the next day from London to Romania, and almost missed my flight to Moldova, because it was late. I ran to my gate and I made it!

I am living in the Grace House which is extremely close to another house owned Victor and Valentina, who are landlords of the Grace House. I am also living with another girl who is going to help keep an eye on the girls this summer. Her name is Mariana, and she is around my age, but doesn't know English!

Currently there are not any girls in the Grace house, but we are starting to prepare for the new girls tomorrow! We are going to do some renovations to the rooms, prepare lesson plans, and interview girls. I will be diving into Romanian, and helping Valentina and Mariana with English.

I am also going to start volunteering at a safe house for women who have been through human trafficking, it is called Beginning of Life and I start on Tuesday!

Please pray for wisdom in deciding which girls would be best for the grace house, a smooth transition for me and the girls when they arrive in a few weeks, and that I can prepare for them the best way that I can!

Thanks for reading :)
